Just call me crazy

TUESDAY 31st of MARCH 2009

I admitt it. I seem to be hug up on a little thing called "TIKI". Given that I just don't seem to be able to get over the whole tiki-theme. I guess I shouldn't be surprised if everybody around me thinks I've gone a bit ga-ga. And yes, it's very likely I'm driving everybody around me crazy with freaky tiki fascination.

Every since I saw my very first Tiki-mug, I've been somewhat fascinated by them. So, for a while now I've been considering starting a collection. Partly because we've decided to host a Tiki-party every winter/spring (see here), but mostly because I think they're ultra cool, decorative and beautiful. Preferably a collection of blue or greenish coloured mugs - 'cause that's my favorite colours, though naturally I'd be happy to have mugs in all the colours of the rainbow. And, just to make it a proper collection, they should be vintage tiki mugs.

...and talking about vintage - look what I found! Yet again, while surfing the net, I came across this little treasure:

--> --> -->

Isn't it pretty? I guess you already know I'm in love with it. A vintage tiki-themed vase: deocrative, functional and fun - absolutely perfect in my eyes (not surprisng). Besides, it's will remind me of summer, sun & sandy beaches all year round - can't say no to that!
It's up for grabs on an internet auction, though I refuse to tell you where ... in case you happen to snap it up before I do. I really, really want this vase. In fact I desperatly NEED it!

Doesn't get more bling than this!

MONDAY 30TH of MARCH 2009

Yesterday evening I was working (first Sunday we're open for the season), and as usual I was surfing the net - though this time it could be described as more like desperately searching the net for anything entertaining (really quiet evening in the restaurant). So, while clicking through one of my favorite haunts, I came across this beauty:

Check out: http://johnnyswing.com/

Designed by Johnny Swing, this couch is completely made out of coins! Nickels to be precise. Over 6400 of them - welded together on a steel frame! It's beautiful, stunning, stylish and interesting all at once. And it's a functional piece of art.

My verdict: absolutely fabulous and I ♥ IT!
(can I please have one...pretty please!)

A year older - and none the wiser...(?)

THURSDAY 26th of MARCH 2009

Yesterday was my birthday. I turned 28. It might be another notch on the "age" belt (so to say), though I can't say I feel neither older nor wiser (still dazed & confused - going on 28, though still a teenager by heart). Anyway, I might not feel older, but I do feel great all the same.

Wednesday started with a blast at 8:40 am. I woke up bright & early (I know most people wouldn't call 8:40 early, but I'm not a morning person by nature, so that's pretty darn early for me) after a good night's sleep. It wasn't so much by choice, but because I'd planned to hit the gym with E at 9:30. Still being in a state of confusion my first thought was that «I had over 45 minutes to get ready», until I suddenly realised it would take me almost 30 minutes to reach the main campus, where Blindern Athletica is located.
Rush! Rush! - not the best way to start the day, but man was I happy that I'd packed my stuff the night before! On with my clothes, a brisk walk to the tram, patiently being squashed on the ride down to Brugata, skipping on to the subway before almost dying walking up the last hill to campus. As usual E was waiting in the locker room ready to go.
1 1/2 hours later it was time for lunch - and amazingly enough, we didn't eat cake (even though it would have been really fitting)
! Only healthy stuff (weird!). Tried to be a good girl & study for a while, though E & I ended up downtown shopping. Mostly window-shopping, though I did scored a pretty chiffon blouse that looks fab with my favorite jeans skirt. Birthday present to myself, and - 30% on sale.

The 25th being the day for commemorating my 28th year on this planet, it had to be celebrated in some way (as we threw a Tiki-party not too long ago, I neither felt the need nor had the energy and time to bother with another party). So, after a few hours relaxing at home on the couch it was time for the festivity to begin! A table was booked at one of my all-time favorite restaurants in Oslo, Yaya's Thai Beach Bungalows (or as I like to call it, a holiday for an evening). Seriously delicous food served in a memorable setting - as the name of the place says, (it's almost as if) your eating out at a beach restaurant in Thailand. T & E had bravely volunteered to accompany me this evening, and we had a great time! Yummy appetizer (prawns wrapped in noodles, deep-fried & served with sweet chilli sauce), green curry (we shared our mai: 3 different types of curry which all were delicious), and a Mai Tai for dessert - it doesn't get better than this! Thanks to the brave girls for a wonderful night out.

Okey, so I still have a two more things on my heart (or brag about, if you like):

  1. ...there's nothing quite like waking up to an inbox (cellphone & mail) and FB-wall full of messages from friends and loved ones congratulating you on your birthday. Tried to answer all the text messages, though sort of gave up on the FB-messages 'cause the sheer number of them was a bit intimidating (+ I sort of didn't have time to deal with it). However, I'm quite overwhelmed & hugely appreciative for all your well wishes. THANK YOU!
  2. ....presents!!! A common feature every year is me not knowing what I want for my birthday. In fact it sort of feels like the more people ask, the more blank I become. Anyway, as usual I'm happy with this year's catch:
Barcelona-trip + money from dear mama, money from fab papa, cocktail glasses from T, book of short stories (crim: "Påskekrim") + moleskin notebooks in turquoise (according to E they're "very me") + handy purse-size pen from E, and 1 season of Mad Men from F.
Great catch! MAMMOTH-size HUG TO EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

And finally, just to make this post even longer, I'm going to add some pictures from Yaya's as soon as I've uploaded them from my camera! Stay tuned!

"Should I stay or should I go now..."

THURSDAY 12th of MARCH 2009

Shekira is not a happy bunny today. At the moment I'm still in the computer lab trying to do an honest days work, but failing miserably. Basically I'm sitting here wondering what to do: Should I stay and try to do some more work (or even surfing as it's better than doing nothing) or should I go home? I'm not really in the mood to do either even though the prospects of relaxing in the comfort of one's own home (usually) wins everytime. Just not today.
My dearest house-mates are sort of having a family gathering as T's parents & sister is coming to visit this weekend. Now don't get me wrong, they are wonderful people - it's me that's the problem. I'm just not in a mood to be happy, bubbly & nice to people at the moment. And as we'll be 5 grown-ups and 1 kid in close quaters - that's just to many people for me to handle right now. Solution? I think I'm going out for comfort-sushi! Everything is better after eating sushi!

Tiki-time & hula hula

WEDNESDAY 11th of MARCH 2006
(updatet 31/03/09 - sorry it took so long!)

Probably against better judgement I've decided to post a few pictures from Saturday's Tiki-party, but it will have to be another day as I don't have them here at the moment. Please be patient - I promise they will be here soon :).

What I can tell you so far is that a Tiki-themed party is great fun. We went with the easily hosted type: Tropical punch (welcome drink), store bought snacks & tropical fruit & dips, and everybody brings their own drinks. For decorations we hung up home-made paper palmtrees on the wall, decorated the tables with real banana leaves, and put a strange water feature on the living room table consisting of a tiny, yeIlow, plastic duck & the top of a pineapple in a bowl of water. Dressing-up for the occation was optional. As the hosts T & I at least had to dress up a bit (T with a fedora & shorts, I in a summer dress, both bearing leis and flowers in our hair), and a few of the guest showed up with "decorations" - very cool!

So, the party was a success - at least I would say so. The first guests left around 1:30 am and the last left after 4 am, so everybody must have been enjoying themselves. I know I did. And not surprisingly,
I definately recommend everybody to host a tiki-party!

The hula-hostess herself...presenting "Kakila"!

...and her partner in crime: "Konia"!

The dynamic mixing duo
...just before they rocked up a batch of Strawberry Margaritas!

Two happy chappies relaxing tiki-style

A few of our guests in deep conversation - Check out the palmtree!
(It's hand-made by yours truely [brag, brag...])

AM rockin' in the rocking chair. Love the dress!

All talk and no fun...(;0P)?

Our recommendation: "Be here or be square!"

Piña Colada comin' right up!

Jeni D , our gorgeous & fun-loving Canadian buddy guested our pad this evening.
Wouldn't be a party without our Jen

The gang: Marte, Mari & K: Good friends from my earliest days at uni
(thrilled you all could come - long, long tme no see!)

...finally, greatest of thanks to our fabulous friend E for helping out with the party (who probably won't be happy with me for posting that photo of her, but then again, it's not my fault you always pull faces on photos!)! We definately wouldn't have been ready without your help! I'm forever grateful for your friendship.

Oh ... and we're going to make the Tiki-party into AN ANNUAL EVENT!
